Remove floppy and boot from the Quantum drive to make sure it boots into Windows 98 Dos. Initialize the Quantum drive - create two partitions, format them and make the first partition bootable. Install the Quantum Drive into the Aptiva.īoot from the Windows 98 Floppy you just created. If it does, use the Aptiva to create a Windows 98 Boot Floppy with FORMAT, SYS and FDISK on it. I use an older version of Norton's Ghost to create the image.ĭoes the Aptiva computer have a Floppy Drive? This is something I do to any computer I pick up so that I have the original operating system image. I have made many images of Windows 98 and restored them successfully to new hard drives. So I'd like to have a solution that is 100% guaranteed to work. I'd continue to try new programs and things but shutting my computer down, connect a hard drive into it, powering it back on, try something new, shutting it down again, connect a new hard drive into it, powering it back on again, try the new thing, shutting it down again, connect the hard drive in the Aptiva, seeing if it works or not, disconnecting the hard drive in the Aptiva again if it doesn't work, connecting it back into my computer, trying something new. Have it work perfectly? And if it is possible, then how do you.Do it? Soooo my question is, is it possible to write a bootable Windows 98 hard drive image on another hard drive and. What kind of errors does Windows 98 run into? I can't really remember but it's things like: "bad line in autoexec.bat/config.sys" "VMM32.DLL is missing or cannot load" and I think it even runs into the dreaded "Windows protection error" error. And I've said earlier why that doesn't make any sense. The Aptiva actually manages to boot into Windows 98, but like I've said earlier the OS encounters so many errors that it fails to completely boot. ![]() When I write the Aptiva's hard drive image on the Quantum hard drive with DriveImage XML, things are different. Which means that those 3 programs do write something on the hard drive, but. When I write the Aptiva's hard drive image on the Quantum hard drive with WinImage, AOMEI Partition Assistant and Macrium Reflect, the Aptiva gets stuck at the black screen with a blinking cursor. Which doesn't make ANY SENSE because the copy of Windows 98 that was written on the Quantum hard drive should be identical to the copy of Windows 98 that was on the Aptiva's original hard drive(which boots up perfectly without any problems!)! ![]() ![]() The problem is when I connect the Quantum hard drive in the Aptiva, the Aptiva either gets stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor when trying to boot from the hard drive, or actually manages to boot into Windows 98 but the OS encounters so many problems that it fails to boot completely. Here's what happens.Įvery programs I've tried had no problems imaging the Aptiva's hard drive and had no problems writing the Aptiva's hard drive image to the Quantum hard drive. Sounds easy right? Well I've been trying to do that for a week and all of my attempts have failed. I want to connect the Aptiva's hard drive to my main computer, image it with a program, disconnect the Aptiva's hard drive from my main computer, replace it with an empty Quantum hard drive, write the Aptiva's hard drive image to the Quantum, connect the Quantum hard drive in the Aptiva and boot into Windows 98. ![]() I have an old IBM Aptiva with a hard drive that has Windows 98 installed on it. Ehhh this is going to be pretty complicated to explain I think.
